07.06.2011

World Environment Day (WED) is annually celebrated all over the world on the 5th of June as well as in Georgia with different massive events. In Tbilisi celebration of World Environment Day started with drawing different topics of nature and environmental protection, because the main theme of WED 2011 is "Nature at Your Service". The event near the Freedom Square was organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Georgia and the United Nations Development Programme.

"The whole world is celebrating this day on the 5th of June and Georgia is not exception, so since morning actions have started to celebrate this important environmental event. This is the day when we must remind all the people, where we live, why and how we should live not to harm environment and to prolong the life of our planet. Our friends painted one ugly fence and made an interesting wall of it," said Mr. Goga Khachidze.

"Today we celebrate World Environment Day. This wall painted by children will stay here in Tbilisi to remember this day. Today"s theme is "Nature at Your Service", it means we should think about what the environment is doing for us and what we are doing for environment protection," said Ms. Inita Poulovica, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Georgia.

Students of Art Academy painted the fence around the former "Tsekavshiri" building and on the parallel of it, the Movement Theatre actors and musicians performed summer show. Members of Green Club, students of Zaal Sulakauri Art Studio and "Bee House" participated in the morning actions with Mr. Goga Khachidze and Ms. Inita Poulovica. Students of "Bee House" were specially dressed in bee forms especially for this day. Little artists drew the existing environment around them in their point of view. The characteristic of Sataplia Nature Reserve - "Dinosaur" was at the event too. The participants were gifted shirts with inscription: "June 5 is World Environment Day".

After the morning event the students of Tbilisi State University showed a film on environmental protection to their friends and other students. Discussion about the film and environment protection was held with the Minister Goga Khachidze after the show.

World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place all year round but the main event is on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere.

On 15 December, 1972 the UN Assembly declared the 5th of June as the World Environment Day. At this day the UN conference was opened in Stockholm that was dedicated to the issues of discussing problems of human environment. Every year the United Nations Environment Programme dedicates the 5th of June to one of the environmental problem by the initiative of the UN. The theme of WED 2011 is "Nature at Your Service." Millions of people and millions of species all share the same planet, and only together can we enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

WED is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.
